I'm not sure if this is going to make any sense, but I think it might be easier if Ray is involved, because it's easier to know what I want when Ray is involved.

Well, we can use normal words for that. I use green to check-in, if my partner seems overwhelmed I ask for a color, especially if they seem a bit out of it, like it wouldn't occur to them to bring it up.
